Repair Work to Begin on George Washington Memorial Parkway Bridges Over Capital Beltway

Single lane closures to start in mid-October for 495 NEXT construction

MCLEAN, VA – Starting on or about September 26, 495 NEXT project crews will begin repair work on the east- and westbound George Washington Memorial Parkway bridges over the Capital Beltway. This work will occur during nighttime hours and will include some noisy activities such as sawing and hammering. Repairs include patching isolated areas that have potholes, uneven payment and other similar roadway damages. The repair work is planned to extend into late October.

Ramp From I-495 South Towards Tysons to George Washington Memorial Parkway East Scheduled to Close Tuesday Night, Sept. 6

MCLEAN, VA – On or about Tuesday night, September 6, the ramp from southbound I-495 toward Tysons to eastbound George Washington Memorial Parkway is scheduled to be closed from 11 p.m. until 4 a.m. the next morning. Crews will be conducting maintenance work on a stormwater management drain. Motorists should follow the signed detour listed below, and should use caution when traveling through this area. All work is subject to change based on weather conditions and contractor scheduling.

Ramp from George Washington Memorial Parkway West to I-495 South to be Reduced to One Lane Starting Sun., Aug, 14

MCLEAN, VA – The ramp from westbound George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) to southbound I-495 (Capital Beltway) will be reduced from two lanes to one lane to make room for a construction vehicle haul route that will be separated from traffic by a physical barrier. Travelers should expect possible delays when approaching and traveling on the narrowed ramp. This traffic change will be in effect throughout construction on the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project. A message board will provide advance notice to approaching motorists

Overnight Demolition of Georgetown Pike Bridge to Start on or About Next Wed., July 27

Traffic shift on Georgetown Pike planned Sun., July 24; Multi-lane closures necessary on Beltway during demolition including detour for southbound I-495 from George Washington Memorial Parkway

MCLEAN, VA As early as next Wednesday night, July 27, the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project team, in coordination with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), will begin demolishing the north side of the Georgetown Pike Bridge over I-495 (side facing the George Washington Memorial Parkway). The occasionally noisy nighttime work is necessary to enable construction of the center pier of the replacement bridge, which will be longer to span the wider future Beltway.

Triple-Lane Closure on North- and Southbound I-495 Planned for Tonight, Wed. June 1

Lane Closure Necessary for 495 NEXT Construction

FAIRFAX, VA During overnight hours tonight, Wednesday, June 1, triple-lane closures will be needed on north- and southbound I-495 between the Dulles Access Road and George Washington Memorial Parkway. These lane closures are necessary to permanently close the northbound Green Arrow/Red X left-shoulder lane (previously open during morning and afternoon peak travel periods), temporarily close the southbound left shoulder, and realign the travel lanes on I-495 to the outside.

FAIRFAX- The Green Arrow/Red X left-shoulder lane on northbound I-495 (the Capital Beltway) in Virginia, which is open during morning and afternoon peak travel periods from where the current I-495 Express Lanes end near the Dulles Access Road to the George Washington Memorial Parkway, will close permanently as early as May 31, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The closure of this shoulder lane is necessary to make space in the center of the Beltway for construction of new bridges that will span the wider, future Beltway at Old Dominion Drive, Georgetown Pike and Live Oak Drive. The work is part of the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project to extend the existing 495 Express Lanes from the Dulles Corridor interchange to the George Washington Memorial Parkway near the American Legion Bridge.

Governor Youngkin Announces I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension Construction to Begin

Virginia officials and project partners mark milestone at groundbreaking ceremony; new express lanes extension to bring congestion relief, new transit options, and economic benefits

TYSONS, VA – Governor Glenn Youngkin today announced the start of construction on a two-and-a-half-mile extension of the express lanes on Interstate 495 between the Dulles Corridor and the George Washington Memorial Parkway in Fairfax County. Governor Youngkin was joined by Virginia Secretary of Transportation Shep Miller, state and local officials, and Transurban—Virginia’s project partner and operator of the 495, 95 and 395 Express Lanes—at a groundbreaking ceremony to officially kick off construction on the 495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project. The latest extension of Virginia’s 90+-mile express lanes network planned for Northern Virginia, the project will provide new travel options, reduce congestion, support new transit services, and minimize cut-through traffic in residential communities.

Virtual Public Information Meeting Sept. 29 for I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension Project

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will hold a Virtual Public Information Meeting on September 29, 2021, to present the latest updates and information related to the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project. The 495 NEXT project involves extending Virginia’s 495 Express Lanes by approximately three miles from the Dulles Toll Road interchange to the George Washington Memorial Parkway interchange in the vicinity of the American Legion Bridge. This important project is advancing to the design and construction phase following more than three years of environmental study and traffic analysis. In June 2021, VDOT received a “Finding of No Significant Impact,” from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) on its environmental assessment, and an approval from FHWA on its interchange justification report, setting the stage for the project to move to the implementation phase.

FAIRFAX – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) announced today it received a “Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI),” from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and National Park Service (NPS) on its environmental assessment for the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project. This approval enables the project to advance into the design and construction phase. Additionally, VDOT received approval from FHWA on the project’s interchange justification report, a traffic study that includes analysis of traffic impacts and benefits associated with the 495 NEXT project.

Virginia's Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT), in partnership with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), will hold a virtual public information meeting on Wednesday, November 18, from 7 until 9 p.m. to provide information and answer questions about Virginia and Maryland's effort to study multimodal transportation options aimed to reduce congestion, improve trip reliability and regional connections, and enhance existing and planned multimodal mobility and connectivity on I-495 and the American Legion Bridge. DRPT will provide a briefing and overview of draft recommendations on this I-495 American Legion Bridge Transit and Transportation Demand Management (TDM) Study, which is being conducted jointly by DRPT and the Maryland Transit Administration.

VDOT to Launch Study to Extend I-495 Express Lanes Toward American Legion Bridge and Maryland Line

Funding approved to conduct environmental analysis of project

RICHMOND Virginia's Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) approved funding in the amount of $6 million Wednesday for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to conduct an environmental study of a plan to extend the I-495 Express Lanes by approximately three miles from the I-495 and Dulles Toll Road interchange to the vicinity of the American Legion Bridge and Maryland line. This northern extension to the 495 Express Lanes would help relieve a traffic-choked section of I-495 by providing more capacity, new travel choices and benefits for carpoolers.
